Sensational – Silver Medal for Lakata
Topeak-Ergon Rider Alban Lakata scores the silver medal at the UCI Mountainbike Marathon World Championships in Pietermaritzburg, RSA. Robert Mennen placed eighth after a great race.
Amazing — Alban Lakata scored the silver medal at the mountain bike marathon world championships in Pietermaritzburg, RSA. The 35-year-old just recovered from an Achilles tendon rupture and is already back in the game. The Austrian is a pure athlete and his mental strength must be frightening for other riders.
At first the race started not so well for Alban. He missed the leading group and had to fight his way back to the front of the field. He chooses to ride the Canyon full suspension bike over the hardtail — this decision paid of later in the race. The 2013 vice world champion made his way to the second leading group at km 65 and left this group behind at km 74.
Like always, Alban’s goal was to win, but this year he is very happy with the silver medal: ”My goal was a medal. To stay on the podium with two of the best riders in the world makes me very happy”. In answer to the question about his Achilles tendon rupture he just replied: ”Throwbacks like that just make me stronger. I had time to focus on some other things in life and was able to come back even stronger!”
Robert Mennen rode a great race as well. The 29-year-old German wasn’t able to join the fight for the medals but he finished in eighth position. This eighth place marked his best result at world championship race so far. Robert had a broken chain during the race and couldn’t stay in the 11 riders strong leading group with his teammate Lakata. Kristian Hynek had to drop out of the race due to a broken rear wheel, but he was also very strong and always in the leading group till that point.
