Third victory for Bigham at Roc Marathon in Frejus

The end of another successful season, and as usual the final race was Roc dd′Azur, in the south of France. It is the biggest race of the season in terms of attendance, as the small town of Frenjus is over-run with cyclists. Sally Bigham added the jewel to the crown by winning the womend′s race with a time of 4:12:07 hours. At the end of the 83km long loop of the Cote dd′Azur, she crossed the line 19minutes ahead of the French rider Helen Marcouyre, and Danish rider Rikke Kornvig. It was her third consecutive win at the annual event. “Perfect. I love this event. It is so hard, but the atmosphere, and it being the last race of the season ? I am so happy to win here for the third time.” Sally said following the race, clearly exhausted.

There was also a good result on the cards for team mate Irina Kalentieva, and she crossed the line in second place with a smile on her face. Racing the womend′s XC race, the Olympian (she finished 4th, just out of the medals) was beaten by the Pole Anna Szafraniec. Kalentieva crossed the line with a time of 2:07:29, just 1:16 minutes down.

In the mend′s race Topeak Ergon also managed some good results. All 3 riders were happy. Leadville winner, Alban Lakata raced both the marathon race and the XC, as did Robert Mennen, and Wolfram Kurschat. All 3 managed to finish in the top ten. “It was great fun. The race is one of the classics.” Wolfram said of his race. His approach was to try to take the lead and hold it as long as possible. It worked, until his team mate Lakata took over. Alband′s results were 4th in the Marathon and fifth in the XC with a time of 2:17:50. “It was a super fast race. Unfortunately I missed the jump to get on the podium, but I am happy”, the Albanator said following the race. Kurschat, who finished with a time of 2:18:33 was seventh, while Mennen followed him over the line in 8th.

So that was it, the end of another successful season. The timetable is now partying and holidaying. Then recovery and training. Team Manager, Dirk Juckwer said of the season, “I am pleased overall with the performance of everyone, and it is great to have Sally round off the season with such a dominating race to take the victory. Now, it is time for a bit of R&R. They have all earned it.” For Dirk though, it continues, with the 2013 season just around the corner, there is lots to do behind the scenes.
